Welcome to NurseHub’s lesson on Expanding Fractions. This lesson will help you to prepare for the Math section of your TEAS exam.

Learning Goals:

We will be able to:

– expand fractions

– determine if expanded fractions are equivalent

Why is this skill important to know?

When we add or subtract fractions with unlike denominators, we have to expand fractions to find common denominators.

Key Vocabulary:

1) Expanding Fractions – create equivalent fractions using larger numbers than those in the original.

2) Equivalent Fractions – fractions that have different numerators and denominators but are the same value.

Key Points:

1) To expand a single fraction multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number.

2) When you multiply the numerator and denominator by the same number, you are really multiplying the original fraction by one whole.

Any number multiplied by 1 stays the same value!

Practice Problems

Try solving each problem below, check your answer, then play the video to see a step-by-step walkthrough of the solution.
