Welcome to NurseHub’s lesson on Multi-Step Word Problems with Fractions and Mixed Numbers. This lesson will help you to prepare for the Math section of your TEAS exam.

Learning Goals:

  • We will be able to solve word problems involving fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers.

Why is this skill important to know?

Situations can occur in life that are like word problems and we aren’t given the equations.

We need to be able to interpret information around us and figure out how to solve those problems.

Key Vocabulary:

1) Sum – answer to an addition problem.

2) Difference – answer to a subtraction problem.

3) Product – answer to a multiplication problem.

4) Quotient – answer to a division problem.

5) Improper Fraction – a fraction whose numerator is larger than the denominator.

6) Mixed Number – a number that contains a whole number and a fraction.

Key Points:

1) Read the whole question first.

2) Go sentence by sentence.

a) Visualize

b) Model / Draw it out

c) Think: Do I need more or less?

3) When you have an answer, ask: “Did I answer the question?”

4) Key Words can be helpful but may not guarantee what to do.
