Word Problems with Decimals

Welcome to NurseHub’s lesson on Word Problems with Decimals. This lesson will help you to prepare for the Math section of your TEAS exam.

Learning Goals:

  1. Solve word problems with decimals.
  2. Determine how to approach word problems.

Key Vocabulary:

  1. Sum – the answer to an addition problem
  2. Difference – the answer to a subtraction problem
  3. Product – the answer to a multiplication problem
  4. Quotient – the answer to a division problem

Key Points:

1. Read the entire problem first.

2. Picture what is happening in the problem:

a. Are you combining things? (addition)

b. Are you taking things away? (subtraction)

c. Are you repeating the same amount? (multiplication)

d. Are you creating equal groups? (division)

3. Go sentence by sentence to see what information you can gather about what you need to do to solve the problem.

4. After you solve a problem, label your answer.

5. When you think you’ve found your answer, ask yourself: “Did I answer the question?”
