Welcome to NurseHub’s lesson on Converting Between Mixed Numbers and Improper Fractions. This lesson will help you to prepare for the Math section of your TEAS exam.

Learning Goals:

We will be able to convert between mixed and improper fractions.

Why is this skill important to know?

We may come across fractions written in both of these forms.

In order to add, subtract, multiply, or divide fractions written in these forms, we have to be able to change mixed numbers to improper fractions and then convert them back to mixed numbers to present the answers.

Key Vocabulary:

1) Improper Fraction – a fraction whose numerator is greater than the denominator.

2) Mixed Number – has a mix of a whole number and a fraction.

3) Numerator – the number on top of a fraction, which tell you how many parts you have.

4) Denominator – the number on the bottom of the fraction, that tells you how many pieces are in one whole.

5) Convert – Change from one kind of a fraction into another without changing the value.

Key Points:

1) The fraction bar really means a division symbol.

2) Whenever we convert, the denominators always stay the same.

(The pieces in one whole don’t change)

3) When we convert, we aren’t changing the values, only what the fraction looks like.

4) Improper -> Mixed

– Divide the numerator by the denominator. Any remainders go over the original denominator.

5) Mixed to Improper

– Multiply the denominator by the whole number.

– Add on the numerator.

– Put that over the original denominator.
