Simplifying Fractions
Welcome to NurseHub’s lesson on Simplifying Fractions. This lesson will help you to prepare for the Math section of your TEAS exam.
Learning Goals:
- We will be able to put fractions into simplest form.
Why is this skill important to know?
By simplifying fractions, we end up with smaller numbers that are easier to use.
(Example: 375/400 versus 15/16)
15/16 is much easier to use for adding, subtracting, etc.
Key Vocabulary:
1) Simplify – create an equivalent fraction using smaller numbers.
2) Simplest Form – an equivalent fraction using the smallest possible numbers.
3) Factor – whole numbers that multiply together to get a product.
4) Greatest Common Factor (GCF) – the largest whole number factor two or more numbers have in common.
5) Numerator – the number on top of the fraction.
6) Denominator – the number on the bottom of the fraction.
Key Points:
1) In order to simplify, we must divide the numerator and denominator by the same number.
2) To put in simplest form in one step:
- Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.
3) You can also choose a factor you know goes into both numbers and divide the numerator and denominator by that number.
- Keep going until you’ve hit simplest form.
4) A fraction is in simplest form when the greatest common factor of the numerator and denominator is 1.
