Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers
Welcome to NurseHub’s lesson on Multiplying and Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers. This lesson will help to prepare you for the Math section of your TEAS exam.
Learning Goals:
We will be able to multiply and divide fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers.
Why is this skill important to know?
Repeating the same fraction amount or splitting a fractional amount into equal-sized groups is incredibly important for such tasks as creating doses of medications and other essential life situations.
Knowing how to multiply and divide fractional amounts is important to full fraction mastery.
Key Vocabulary:
1) Improper fraction – a fraction where the numerator is larger than the denominator.
2) Mixed Number – has a whole number and a fraction.
3) Product – answer to a multiplication problem.
4) Numerator – the number on top of the fraction.
5) Denominator – the number on the bottom of the fraction.
6) Quotient – the answer to a division problem.
7) Reciprocal – the opposite of a fraction where the numerator and denominator are swapped.
Key Points:
MULTIPLICATION
1)When you multiply fractions, you do not need common denominators.
2) When multiplying fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together.
3) Change your mixed numbers into improper fractions before multiplying.
4) You can cross-simplify before multiplying if possible. (it must always include one numerator and one denominator).
5) If your answer is an improper fraction, you may turn it back into a mixed number.
DIVISION
1) If mixed numbers are involved turn them into improper fractions.
2) We follow the KCF rules.
a. K – Keep the first fraction.
b. C – Change the division sign to multiplication.
c. F – Flip the last fraction
3) If you can cross-simplify prior to multiplication – do it!
4) Multiply across like normal.
5) Simplify the answer if possible.
6) If the answer is an improper fraction you may turn it into a mixed number.
