In this lesson, Nurse Kelly will discuss the important attitudes of critical thinkers. They include:

  1. Independence of Thought: Critical thinkers have the ability to think independently. They can generate ideas and answers on their own before seeking input from others, relying on research and available resources.
  2. Fair-Mindedness: Critical thinkers treat every viewpoint in an unbiased and unprejudiced way, even when their own beliefs differ. This aligns with ethical standards, such as those in the American Nursing Association’s Code of Ethics.
  3. Insight into Egocentricity and Sociocentricity: Critical thinkers are aware of when they are thinking solely in their self-interest (egocentricity) and when they are considering the greater good (sociocentricity).
  4. Intellectual Humility: Recognizing one’s intellectual limitations and abilities is a promising sign of a future nurse. It signifies teachability and a willingness to learn from others while also being confident in one’s strengths.
  5. Nonjudgmental: Critical thinkers base their judgments on professional ethical standards rather than personal or moral standards, aligning with the high integrity expected of nurses.
  6. Perseverance: They persist in their efforts despite difficulties, a crucial trait in healthcare where tough decisions are common.
  7. Confidence: Critical thinkers believe in themselves and their ability to complete tasks successfully, which is important for healthcare students preparing for exams or challenging situations.
  8. Reflection: Reflecting on the pros and cons of decisions and exploring thoughts and feelings are essential aspects of critical thinking. It encourages curiosity and a deeper understanding of why things happen the way they do.

These attributes collectively contribute to effective critical thinking, which is vital in nursing practice and healthcare decision-making.
